A Day in the Life of Kerry Amber: Volunteering

About 8 years ago, my mom was a volunteer for a local cat rescue organization. So I decided to help her. This organizations was called P.A.L.S. It is a non-profit no kill organization which saves many cats' lives each year. They are very well cared for and interact with each other on a daily basis, so when they are adopted, they can become a part of a multi-cat home. Certain cats require foster-care because they were abused as a kitten or are simply afraid of humans. So my mom and I decided to turn our guest bedroom into our foster room. We have 3 cats of our own, but we decided that, for the safety of all of the cats, not to allow our cats and the foster cats to interact with each other. One day my mom brought home a very shy cat named Jenna. Jenna was a yellow-ish, orange-ish cat who was the sweetest thing you will ever meet, but she wouln't come out of her hiding spot for anything. So we decided to bring in her brother Jaggar. Jaggar was sweet, and not afraid of people by any means. Eventually Jenna trusted us enough to emerge.
One day, a local news channel did a feature on P.A.L.S. and Jenna, Jaggar, and I were featured. Because of this one, small show, the brother and sister were adopted. Unfortunalty, I was crushed. I loved these cats, and still wish that we adopted them. But they have a great home now.
There are many organizations like P.A.L.S. which are strickly volunteer and need help. These cats NEED homes and deserve them. Many local S.P.C.A.'s have just become non kill as well, so please get out there and help. Maybe you are not a cat person. Dogs, ferrets and other pets need help as well. Volunteering and helping these animals gives you a great sense of pride and accomplishment, and you fall in love with these animals. They need you and you probably need them, you just don't know it. PLEASE get out there and get involved.
